Zombie Story

I came across this this today, a slideshow showing the similarities between the Toy Story films and the TV show The Walking Dead. It’s really well done. Be warned though, if you’re not up to date with The Walking Dead (or Toy Story for that matter) there are spoilers ahead.

Being The IT Guy Sucks

One of the most unfortunate aspects of my teaching life was it being discovered that I had an affinity for all things computer, tech and gadget based. This resulted in me being the default ‘Computer Guy’ for the school despite being a full time teacher. It effectively meant I had two full time jobs and involved a lot of interrupted classroom time and lots of lost breaks. It wasn’t fair on the students and it wasn’t fair on me. In the infographic below, check out the sections on ‘They are expected to be” and “Worst Colleagues”, that was me. Then throw in elementary school teacher. No wonder I left.

The interruptions got so ridiculous I had to start getting my students to answer the classroom phone. I had them trained to say “Mr Nez can’t come to the phone right now, he’s in the middle of teaching us.” It annoyed people, not everyone, but the worst offenders were put out, but they eventually started to get the hint. My favourite interruptions were always about printers not working, usually because they weren’t switched on or had no paper.

I really miss the kids and I loved being a teacher, but I’m pretty sure the “computer guy” curse was going to follow me no matter what school I went to.

Shave Day

Well, the job is complete and my head has now been shaved. The whole experience has been a positive one and shown me that there are many caring people all over the globe. I more than achieved my goal, and at the time of writing this post I’ve raised $2595. Just wow.

I have a few people to thank for their generous support, but first, a small and frivolous video interlude:

And now on to the people I need to thank. First up, my wife for supporting me in doing this in the first place (I know, I only shaved my head, but it’s still nice to have her support) and my mum for taking time out of her day to do the shaving. Secondly, to all of the generous sponsors who made this such a successful experience for me and allowed me to raise the amount I did. It means a lot to know I had that kind of support. And lastly, to everyone who retweeted, liked, commented and just generally showed an interest over the last month or so. It’s been great fun and has been an interesting experiment in and of itself seeing the power of social media in action.

The Slightly Bumpy Shape Of Things To Come

With just two days to go until I shave my head, I thought I’d give you a sneak peek of what things might look like once the deed takes place. If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, check out this post first: http://www.andrewnez.com/help-me-help-others

A couple of months ago I came across an artist called Charles Dowd on Google Plus. Charles is doing something he calls the Not Quite 366 Avatars Project 2012, where is attempting to create a huge number of avatars over the course of the year. You can read more about Charles and his project here:  Charles Dowd on Google Plus

I of course put my hand up and received a fantastic avatar I’ve used in a few places already. On a whim last week I put it to Charles about what I was doing with shaving my head and raising some money for cancer research and the fact that it would be cool to have an ‘after’ version of my avatar. Charles has graciously created one for me as you can see below.

Nez Before and After

Now, I’m not going the full bare skin bald, I’m stopping at a number one clipper length, but this is still a pretty good indication of what to expect. Apparently there’s a bit of a Walter White/Breaking Bad vibe happening.

Thank You!

I’ve been incredibly humbled by the responses online to my quest to raise some money for cancer research by shaving my head (read more about that here: Help Me Help Others). So a big thank you to those who have helped me so far.
